Gig Harbor Washington to Bar Harbor Maine 2001

July 14 - Ludington MI | |
I kept rolling over until the sun had been on me long enough to make me good and hot, nearly 10:00. A couple of runners came by and stopped long enough to ask about the recumbent. I know they would have liked to sit on it, but they were so drenched in sweat I didn't offer. These were some serious runners. We rode a mile to the campground, found a spot far enough way from the revving dirt bikes, made camp, showered and headed off for food. We went to House of Flavors for lunch so Kathryn could get some good ice cream, but she didn't, just Garcia and I. Lunch was great and we went off to do our various chores. I found a Michigan map and finally broke down and bought an atlas. I needed to see what was left of the big picture. I'm so ignorant about the East, or is it the Midwest?

I went back to the beach thinking about frolicking and swimming, but the green grass and the shade attracted me instead. I wrote and read and slept. I'm starting to rely on my phone more and more and it was dead from my lake calls last night. I went back to camp and found a plug-in and read by it for another hour. I didn't realize what a zombie I was from the weird night's sleep and high-mileage days until Gridley's brother Curt called. He'd flown his family in to see us and take us out to dinner. I thought it was 4:00 instead of 5:00 and that Gridley's ferry would be in at 5:00 instead of 6:00. Either way, it was time to meet the ferry.
They could use more sleep |

The kids were already there, since I'd confused them about time too. Gridley finally got off the ferry at 7 and we rode out to the Holiday Inn. Curt wanted to take us into town for dinner. The small airports usually have a courtesy car for pilots, but Ludington's was broken. The Holiday Inn gave them a ride to the hotel, but their shuttle will only start once a day and wouldn't start again. The bus wasn't running, the taxi wasn't answering the phone. Even the Holiday Inn desk clerks offered us the use of their cars, except they didn't have any. We thought we had the choice of McDonalds or Big Boy, but there was a Kuntry Kubbard just down the road. We had an awesome buffet. Too bad we weren't riding, we could have really put it away.

Curt took Kathryn and Garcia for a plane ride, Gridley hung around and I went back to camp. I needed a little more chill time and had to shred my atlas for the few pages I wanted. I picked up some breakfast milk and some Busch NA just so I could feel like I belonged in the campground. A group of females around a campfire bitching about men on one side of us and a group of guys worthy of being bitched about around a campfire on the other side convinced me it was a night for fake beer and a xanax.
